Green Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie Recipe (with Green Superfood Powder)

Green peanut butter banana smoothie in a glass with a banana and peanut butter nearby

This green peanut butter banana smoothie is a thick, milkshake-like blend of cold milk, a frozen banana, peanut butter and a spoonful of green superfood powder (a powdered blend of barley grass, wheat grass and chlorella). It takes about a minute in a high-speed blender and makes one 16-ounce glass.

Green powders taste grassy when stirred into water. Banana and peanut butter are strong, sweet and nutty enough to cover that flavor almost completely, so the smoothie tastes like peanut butter and banana and only looks green. Freezing the banana beforehand chills and thickens the drink without much ice, which keeps the flavor from being watered down.

Natural peanut butter, made from just peanuts and perhaps salt, works best; fresh homemade peanut butter made in the same blender is a good choice. With a ripe, well-spotted banana no other sweetener is usually needed.

Green Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

A creamy smoothie of milk, frozen banana, peanut butter and green superfood powder, blended on high for about a minute.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1 16-ounce smoothie
Course: Beverage, Breakfast
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter smooth or crunchy
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons green superfood powder a powdered blend of barley grass, wheat grass and chlorella
  • 1 medium ripe banana peeled, sliced and frozen
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup optional

Method

  1. Put the ingredients into the blender pitcher in the order listed: the 1 cup of milk first, then the peanut butter, green superfood powder, frozen banana slices and ice cubes.
  2. Start the blender on low and quickly raise it to high. Blend for 45 to 60 seconds, until the smoothie is thick, completely smooth and evenly pale green, using the tamper if the frozen banana stalls above the blades.
  3. Taste. If it needs sweetening, add the honey or maple syrup and blend for a few seconds more. Pour into a glass and serve right away.

Notes

Freeze bananas ahead: peel ripe bananas, slice them into coins and freeze them in a sealed bag or container for at least 4 hours. They keep in the freezer for 2 to 3 months, ready for smoothies.
Dairy-free option: replace the milk with 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, hemp milk, soy, oat or coconut milk beverage. Everything else in the recipe is already dairy free; check the label of the green powder to be sure.
Green powders vary in strength and serving size. Start with 1 teaspoon the first time, go up to 2 teaspoons if the flavor is agreeable, and do not exceed the serving size given on the product’s label.
If the banana is not frozen, increase the ice to 1 cup. The smoothie will be a little less creamy.
A standard blender also works: let the frozen banana slices soften for 5 minutes first, and blend a little longer, stopping to stir if needed.
The smoothie is best freshly made. If it has to wait, keep it covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 day and shake or re-blend before drinking; the color will darken slightly.
