Hemp milk is a dairy-free milk made by blending hemp seeds with water, and it is inexpensive and quick to make at home. The base formula is 1 cup of hulled hemp seeds (hemp hearts) to 4 cups of cold filtered water, blended on high for about 60 seconds, which makes about 4 cups.
Everything else is optional and adjustable. A pinch of sea salt, a teaspoon of vanilla extract and anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of sweetener can be added, or the milk can be left completely plain. Straining is optional too, because hulled seeds blend almost completely; a nut milk bag or a cloth-lined fine mesh basket gives the smoothest result.
Bulk hemp seeds spoil fast at room temperature and turn rancid, so they belong in the fridge in a tightly sealed container. The finished milk is kept cold as well, in a clean, airtight container, and is best used within 3 to 4 days.

Basic Hemp Milk
Ingredients
Method
- Start with the 4 cups of cold filtered water in the blender jar. Any sweetener, vanilla extract or sea salt being used goes in next, and the hemp seeds last.
- Run the blender on its high setting for roughly 60 seconds, until the milk is smooth and creamy.
- Straining is optional and can be skipped. For a nut milk bag, hang the bag in a large sterile jar, fasten it at the sides and pour the milk in slowly. For a cloth, line a fine mesh basket with a clean cloth (organic and dye-free), rest the basket in a clean bowl and pour the milk through.
- Let the milk drip through by itself, or gently wring out the bag or cloth.
- Transfer the finished milk to a clean, airtight container and keep it refrigerated. Use it within 3 to 4 days and shake it before pouring, since it separates as it stands.
